Featured Program

The Modern-Language & Culture After-School Program (MLC-ASP), initiated and led by foreign language professors Sabine Smith and Luc Guglielmi, engages undergraduate students at KSU with K12 public schools by turning students into learning facilitators for language and culture instruction at local elementary and middle schools.  Through this on-going partnership, undergraduates have the option of earning partial course credit by crafting and delivering lesson plans with age-appropriate learning opportunities that appeal to multiple intelligences. KSU students teach children about the products, practices and perspectives of another culture in a thematically focused approach (e.g. “How do children in Germany live?” or “What significance do head coverings have in different cultures?”). Via interactive games and hands-on activities, KSU students and children alike reinforce knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to the development of intercultural competence. Furthermore, undergraduates engage with faculty, staff, peers, and children as they assess the extent to which they meet both personal learning goals and community-based needs.  The initiative accommodates around 35 KSU students per semester and, since its inception in 2005, has reached approximately 1100 children.  For more information, contact Professor Sabine Smith at ssmith2@kennesaw.edu.
