Featured Program

“Aprender Ayudando”
Approximately forty Carleton students of Spanish are engaged in a service-learning project each fall, assisting non-English speaking Hispanic students in the Northfield Public Schools. The purpose of the project is twofold: first, Carleton mentors have the opportunity to meet some of the growing Hispanic population in Northfield while aiding these children in their academic pursuits. Second, by speaking Spanish with the children in certain cases, Carleton students deepen the exchange and implicitly underscore the value of their mentees’ native language. During the semester, volunteers contribute to the group project by collaborating with one another via a collective weblog.
