Haiku Middle Passage
The year 2007 represented 200 years since an act of the British parliament abolished the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. To help commemorate that event GRCC participated in a regional collaborative by launching a unique interdisciplinary exhibit called Haiku Middle Passage (HMP). HMP is an artistic collaboration that brings poetry, visual art and music in a narrative that addresses the global complexity captured in the history of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, as well as current attitudes around establishing equality for all human beings. HMPs goal is to complete 200 showings and end by having all artwork, like the people of the experience, sold in a public auction. HMP’s art and auction intend to be representative of a collective historical experience that provides us with reflective material to inform a more equitable present.

Multicultural Literacy and Academic Service-Learning Curriculum
Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) Multicultural Children’s Literature students partner with the Campfire LOOP Program and Palmer Elementary, a Grand Rapids Public School, to bring an inclusive reading program to approximately second and third grade students at the school. GRCC students work in teams with the same small group of elementary students for 8 -10 weeks; they have the potential to work with up to 100 elementary students. Most of the college students are considering career as teachers. They use multicultural children’s books representing a wide variety of cultures. The majority of books are from the Cambios list of books chosen to help heal racism and promote diversity.
GRCC students prepare a lesson plan using one or two books they have chosen for each week they work with elementary students, and they prepare a related activity that focuses on the lesson learned. Over the past two years this Academic Service-Learning project has evolved and this year, Professor Mary Bayer hopes to attain support that will allow each elementary student to receive their own book and each classroom to receive both a book and a collection of lesson plans developed by the college students. The reciprocity of this program comes from the need it provides both the elementary and college students. The 2nd and 3rd graders receive additional literacy along with purposeful expose to multicultural issues. The college students receive practice in developing critical thinking skills and applying the principles of Cooperative Learning –A Foundation for Race Dialogue as outlined by Jeff Sapp in the fall 2006 edition of Teaching Tolerance.
