Featured Program

The Other Side (link) is a non-profit community gathering place in the city of Utica that was founded in 2007 by Kim Domenico, who is co-owner of the Café Domenico, a coffee bar located next door.  The Other Side sponsors its own intellectual and cultural events and is also available to members of the community who wish to rent it for similar purposes.

In Fall 2008, Hamilton College faculty members gave four talks on subjects drawn widely from the arts and humanities at The Other Side, and four more are taking place this semester.  All have been well-attended, with Utica residents making up about three-quarters of the audience.  The 2008-09 talks include  “If You Build It, They Will Succumb: Globalization and the Olympics, Ancient and Modern” (James B. Wells, Classics); “Digital Storytelling in Public Housing: Our Home, Our Community” (Judith Owens Manley, Government, Community Research); “The Slow Food Movement in the Mohawk Valley” (David Gapp, Biology, Naomi Guttman, English and Creative Writing, Frank Sciacca (Russian Studies); “The Medea Project: Performing Greek Myth in Prison” (Nancy Rabinowitz, Comparative Literature); “Making Lolita Safe for Democracy: How the Critics Tamed Nabokov's Novel” (Peter Rabinowitz, Comparative Literature); “Commercial Folk: Dow Chemical's "Human Element" Campaign” (Lydia Hamessley, Music); “Thomas Nast and the Making of Modern America” (Jay Williams, Religious Studies and Asian Studies); and “On Religion and Film” (Brent Rodriguez-Plate, Religious Studies)
