Featured Program

Public Humanities Scholars
Established in 2003, Public Humanities Scholars is a joint venture of the Penn State Institute for the Arts and Humanities and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. This innovative program matches Penn State faculty with community-based, non-profit organizations so that, together, they can plan and present public humanities and humanities-based arts programs in central Pennsylvania. Public Humanities Scholars has resulted in over twenty fruitful collaborations. Examples have included the following:

* Allied Motion Dance Company of Altoona worked collaboratively with philosophy professor Emily Grosholz. Together, they planned and implemented a new dance piece, based on Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, that explored the ideas of justice and ethics. Professor Grosholz provided input and assistance as the dance was developed and suggested new thematic approaches. She then participated in the event itself by giving a pre-show lecture and a post-show talk-back.

* Art history professor Chika Okeke-Agulu visited the State College Friends School and engaged in two activities: a lecture open to teachers and students on the subject of African masking, which dealt with issues of play and ritual; and a session on African storytelling in the second/third grade classroom, which was studying Africa.
