Eulogy for Kreischerville
Professor Bill Murphy paints and draws the Staten Island landscape, with a focus on the island’s past. When a large track of land along the Arthur Kill was cleared for the construction of townhouses, it revealed the waterfront of the 19th century industrial “Kreischerville” brick factory area, where many abandoned barges, ferries, and other wooden vessels are still moored. This last ship “boneyard” was to be removed as an eyesore. With permission from the developers, Professor Murphy has been painting and drawing these last vestiges of Staten Island’s history, and mounting public exhibitions and talks about his work.
