2008 Critical Exchange Grant: Call for Proposals due December 15th, 2007
Imagining America announces the availability of eight grants, of $2,000 a piece, to support visits between IA member institutions and intended to nourish new projects, collaborations, and programs in public arts, humanities, and design.

Sekou Sundiata, Poet, Performer, and Activist
It is with great sadness that we inform you that Sekou Sundiata, the eloquent and much loved poet, performer, artist activist and educator, passed away on July 18, 2007 at the age of 58. A member of the Imagining America National Advisory Board, Sekou Sundiata fell ill earlier this month as he was preparing for the European premiere of his latest epic music/theater piece, the 51st dream state, on which IA was a partner, at the Stimmen Festival in Germany. Critical Exchange Grant Winners Announced
January 16, 2007. Ann Arbor, MI.—Imagining America announces the awarding of this year's Critical Exchange Grants. These grants, of $2000 each, are intended to enhance the exchange of knowledge and ideas between IA campuses, and particularly to encourage the development of new partnerships and programs. Syracuse University Announces Search for National Director of Imagining America
January 23, 2007. Syracuse, NY. Syracuse University, which will soon become the second host university to Imagining America, launches its search for a new national director of IA.

The three subcategories of this elective classification recognize institutions excelling either in curricular engagement, outreach and partnerships, or both. Václav Havel Residency at Consortium Member Campus Columbia University

December 15, 2006. New York, NY. Václav Havel's play, Performance: Protest, opens this week at Columbia University's Schapiro Studio. This production caps a seven week residency at the university by the Czech artist, thinker, essayist, human rights leader and transformational political leader. Boston Globe Editorials on Campus- Community Engagement
November 7, 2006.
— Boston, MA. Boston's mayor, Thomas Menino, was featured in an editorial today (and August 29, 2006) in which he called on local universities to "eliminate the barrier between Boston's 145 public schools and the city's major institutions of higher education." Mayor Menino's call parallels an active discussion over the last few years among the U.S. Conference of Mayors about university public service, outreach, and engagement community.

New Funding Opportunity for Member Campuses
September 23, 2006. —Ann Arbor, MI. Imagining America announces a new grant program for member campuses, the Critical Exchange Grants. These grants aim to develop a vital network of horizontal exchange among member colleges and universities by supporting visits between Imagining America Member Institutions.

Our goal is to foster lively coalitions of individuals, departments, centers, and programs at each member campus, working together to strengthen public scholarship and community partnerships. We think that the best way to do this is to help the people who are doing this work 'on the ground' in different places to develop fruitful exchanges with one another.


Civic Performance Conference to be Hosted by Stony Brook
November 1, 2006
. —Stony Brook, NY. Civic Performance, a three-day, public conference will bring together academics, community activists and cultural interventionists to explore the complex issues facing Long Island on November 15-18, 2006. The focus of the conference is on three primary areas of investigation: sustainable development, the environment and youth at risk. The participants will also examine ways that artists can draw attention to problems and support the work of community activists. Katrina Web Resource Coming Soon
August 1, 2006. —Ann Arbor, MI. We will soon release a comprehensive list of web links documenting what higher ed institutions and national, state, and community organizations are offering and doing in response to Hurricane Katrina; the need for such a resource emerged from conversations with faculty from the Gulf Coast area and last year's Imagining America conference session. It is our hope that this information will be useful to Imagining America's member institutions and to others who are working to restore and sustain campus-community partnerships in the humanities, arts, and design along the Gulf Coast. Taking Public Scholarship Seriously
June 9, 2006.— Washington, DC. National Co-Chairs of the IA Tenure Team Initiative, Nancy Cantor (Chancellor and President of Syracuse University) and Steven D. Lavine (President of the California Institute of the Arts), authored an article, entitled "Taking Public Scholarship Seriously," in the Chronicle of Higher Education today. IA Tenure Team Initiative Knowledge Base Launched
June 9, 2006. —Ann Arbor, MI. The Imagining America Tenure Team Initiative (TTI) is pleased to announce the release of the TTI Knowledge Base, a resource for faculty and administrators seeking to more fully support public scholarship at their institutions. With substantial readings in seven key areas, the Knowledge Base is freely accessible through the Imagining America web site.

FYI "Film Your Issue" Competition Launched
January 23, 2006. Los Angeles, CA. FYI Film Your Issue, a national "issue film" competition targeting 7 million college students launched in partnership with numerous corporate, educational, government and non-profit sponsors and partners.

FYI Film Your Issue is soliciting 30 to 60 second "issue films" to encourage young Americans to add their voice to public dialogue on current issues. Submission deadline *extended* to May 21, 2006. Read full details on FYI here [Read more]

IA Consortium Members Receive Ford Foundation Grants
December 12, 2005. —New York, NY. The Ford Foundation has selected 27 higher education institutions to receive grants of $100,000 each for projects that promote campus environments where sensitive subjects can be discussed in a spirit of open scholarly inquiry, academic freedom and with respect for different viewpoints. Eight of the twenty-seven grantees are also Imagining America consortium members: Arizona State University; Clark University; Emory University ; San José State University; University of California, Irvine; University of Michigan; University of Washington; Yale University. An additional consortium member (the University of California, Berkeley) received a $10,000 stipend to participate in the program. April 19, 2005. Austin, Texas. PAGE Program Coordinator, Sylvia Gale, and IA Director, Julie Ellison were interviewed on Marketplace, a public radio program, in a news segment examining the Community Sabbatical Program at the University of Texas and the national efforts underway to forge links between the university and community members and organizations.

Sylvia Gale is the Community Programs Coordinator for the UT Humanities Institute and Program Coordinator of PAGE, an Imagining America initiative in support of public scholarship among graduate students. Julie Ellison is the Director of Imagining America.
